PUBLISHED COLLAGEN RESEARCH

What does the research show?

Published studies have reported improvements in nail breakage and skin hydration and elasticity. Results depend on the formulation and study; explore the findings below.

Nails: measurable changes in a 24-week study.

Researchers followed 25 people with brittle nails who took collagen peptides daily. At 24 weeks, they reported these changes from the participants’ starting measurements:

Frequency of broken nails
−42%
Nail growth rate
+12%

For anyone who struggles to keep a neat free edge, these are encouraging findings: fewer broken nails and a higher growth rate were both observed.

Hexsel et al., 2017: 2.5 g/day of VERISOL peptides, 25 participants, 24 weeks; an open-label study without a placebo group. Read on PubMed

Skin: hydration, elasticity and a smoother appearance.

A 2023 review covering 26 randomized trials and 1,721 participants reported improvements in skin hydration and elasticity with oral collagen. These are the qualities behind skin that feels more supple and looks well cared for. Read the skin research

The evidence varies by formulation and study quality. A 2025 review found positive pooled results, but its higher-quality and non-industry-funded study groups did not show significant benefits. The figures and images here describe the specific research products tested. Read the 2025 review

Hair: another area of beauty research.

A 2024 trial of a hydrolyzed collagen and vitamin C combination reported improvements in some hair and scalp measures over 12 weeks. The product studied was Absolute Collagen. It adds to the interest in nutritional approaches to hair care alongside a good everyday routine. Read the hair and skin trial

Before and after, measured in a skin study.

These skin-surface images come from an eight-week randomized trial of NS Collagen Peptide involving 70 adults. The study assessed changes around the eyes using instrument-based measurements.

Beauty care meets an active life.

Collagen is part of the connective tissues involved in movement, including tendons, ligaments and cartilage. That is why collagen peptides are studied in sports nutrition as well as beauty.

In a randomized trial of 139 athletic participants, those taking 5 g of specific collagen peptides each day for 12 weeks had a greater reduction in activity-related knee discomfort than the placebo group. A useful research finding for people interested in joint comfort alongside their active routine. Read the joint-comfort study
